It only made sense in BW and XY, since you had another rival who DID choose the starter strong against yours. In those cases, Shauna and Cheren were just taking the only pokemon left.

This is probably the only aspect of the XY rivals that they did right

Which is really stupid anyway, because at the level you get them they typically only have a normal attack. By the time you fight them a second time with your STABs, you've had lots of time to prepare to collect other pokemon to deal with their starter.

They should just retire that concept. There are other ways to learn type advantages and your rival doesn't need to be a hometown buddy.
