Decided to play a game from every generation.

Just finished Yellow for Gen 1, beat the game with a team below level 49.

Next is Crystal, any thoughts on optimisation?

if you pick Cyndaquil, just pick up a Poliwag and farm Geodudes, then early game is piss easy. If you pick Totodile there are no significant problems.

Depends what you're trying to optimise. If it's speed then Totodile is generally seen as the best starter. Also if you start the game's clock just before night time (e.g. 5:50pm) it gives you a change to catch Sentret and then Poliwag in the first few routes as HM slaves.

If you're just trying to beat the game with minimal grinding then honestly you should be fine for the vast majority of it since the trainers are such a low level (especially after Ecruteak). Clair will probably be the first notable jump in levels, but you can get the Ice Punch TM from Goldenrod. Then after the elite 4, the levels of Kanto trainers are pretty low aside from Blue and Red.
