Lapras and Snorlax are his journey mons, but Espeon is better type coverage. So it depends on your perspective.

I'd say Espeon, but that would mean that he sat on his eevee he got from Celadon until much later. as far as coverage goes, the 3 eeveelutions of his time were already covered on his team and a psychic rounds it out well

Does Red have something against evolution stones? He would have had to take Pikachu and Eevee to the E4 in RBY. Eevee would later evolve into Espeon without the use of a stone. Pikachu has no alternate evolution so it just stayed that way.
