XYZ can only be considered good if you were in the target audience of self-inserting edgy teen when you watched it. From any other perspective it's just the stereotypical anime protag who has a special unique gimmick that can't lose until the plot needs him to, which is pretty boring when its been done so many times before.

It was a generic anime arc with a boring romantic interest. Ash was even given a retarded protagonist superpower that made zero sense. The villain were also shoe horned and rushed. The new series focused more on the comedy aspect of the series. Ash was never a good protagonist. He fills a better role as a duel protagonist and comic relief.

Cope, that's a shitty format only used in tranime. The greatest tournament in the Pokemon franchise, the PWT, uses 3v3. Even in the Ultra Class of the World Tournament in current season is 3v3 at best. And as you know, the Final 8 will all be main characters and we will watch all the matches and not just Ash's, just like it happened in Alola. Alola League made a step in the right direction when it comes to tournament arcs.

Probably a hot take, but PWT is boring for this very reason. Battles end very quickly and it doesn't have any fun gimmicks like the Battle Frontier to mix things up.

I'd rather have 6v6 rematches like Gen 4.

don't @ me because you probably weren't even born when the original was airing. XY is the best and the only glaring issue with it is it came out too late and it has inferior digital animation instead of cel animation. If XY was a direct sequel it could have made the cutoff before thigns started to look worse. It may have the best animation but it definitely suffers from the digital art style.
