It was mostly a platform for competitions. The wild area basically got rid of grinding and gave unlimited berries for EV training. Nobody played the game for the plot.

Usually try to catch the legendary pokemon and play the post game after the main game. Sword and Shield have a terrible main game and mediocre post game. While forcing you to capture the legendary pokemon. Instead of having to search for them. Gold and Silver are the gold standard for pokemon content. With Ruby and Sapphire being a close second.

I want adventure and exploration. I never really found the competitve stuff to be engaging and I always expect the story to be bad.

I don't battle, but I like to make perfect mons that look good on paper. I might try the shiny chaining and keep them as is like a collector. You really have to make your own fun because there isn't a lot.

Adventure and exploration have been dead ever since Unova (you could even argue it started in Sinnoh to some extent). Now you just walk in a straight line until you beat the champion.
