It really isn't. The region has some interconnected routes, but the path you actually take is almost entirely linear. It's barely an improvement over shitnova. Hoenn was the last good region.

Pokemon didn't need to become an open world game. I think people have this fantasy in their mind about what the series "should" be since childhood, and Game Freak isn't entirely up to the task of making that happen. I wouldn't mind if they kept working to refine Gen 4/5/6 world design (which were all "3D" games with classic top-down gameplay).
