Ash/Serena minds me a lot of Naruto/Hinata in that both ships required retcons to the protagonist's backstory and canon characterization in order to work.

Retcon means retroactive continuity. Serena was not thought of prior to XY, so her being part of Ash's past is a retcon. A retcon doesn't have to contradict anything in order to be a retcon.

That's the thing actually, the Shonen-obsessed ESLs don't actually self-insert as Ash, they just want to see him win as much as possible so he can be the next Goku, Naruto, Luffy, etc. to fulfill their protagonist wankfest.
