Doesn't it make sense that Ash would lose major tournaments? He's only been travelling a year, a literal child, facing adults with decades of experience. Is everyone else that incompetent?

It's not been a year, I'm not an autist to count all days but it must be more than year. From his adventures at Alola, the professor's wedding through his victory and then his first return, at least 9 months passed because Kukui had a child, which mind you has grown up a bit. Not anymore. Not counting Orange, every League except Unova had him get higher than his previous outing, culminating in becoming Champion of Alola.
Call him slow, but he worked his way there. Literally wishing his way into being 10 for 7 generations sure helped, too.

BW is the only time he regressed and they backpedalled hard on that after. It's time to stop clinging to falsehoods and face the facts.
