>Chesnaught: Undefined mammalian monster with a big spiky shell>Delphox: Wizard with a fox motif>Greninja: Ninja with a frog motifGen 6 marks the first time the themes become sickeningly obvious, to the point where they completely take over two of the designs. Greninja balances the two better, but Delphox is really just a dude in a fox suit (Also I know Chesnaught is a hedgehog. But that's not exactly obvious just from looking at it, is it?)
>Decidueye: Owl with an archer theme>Incineroar: Wrestler with a tiger motif>Primarina: Seal with a singer themeDebatably more animal-like than Gen 6. Debatably. You wouldn't know Decidueye's theme until it pulls out the bow, so it's fine, but Incineroar is a wrestler first and tiger second, full stop. Primarina is...it could go either way. Seal body, but human hair. I'd say more seal than human, but it's subjective
>Rillaboom: Gorilla with a drummer theme>Cinderace: Soccer player with a rabbit motif>Inteleon: Spy with a lizard motifRillaboom is a creature design. Gorilla first, drummer second. The other two are character designs. They are their themes first and species second. No way around it.
>Hisuian Decidueye: Ronin with an owl motif>Hisuian Typhlosion: Badger with a Buddhist sage motif>Hisuian Samurott: Otter/Sea Lion hybrid with a corrupt samurai motifDecidueye's new hat and shorter cloak do push it into the realm of theme first. It is now impossible not to notice its design inspiration. Typhlosion treads the line, more on the animal side by virtue of its body-type, but it's close. And Samurott is virtually identical to its original self. The theme is slightly more prominent, but you still see the animal first
There it is. You can debate all you want which designs are good or bad, but that's how they line up in terms of theme vs. creature
