Can someone explain the meme behind Kanto pandering? Is it a bad thing for first generation pokemon to appear in later games? Or do people just throw the term out as a vague reason for a generation they dislike?

Simply having Kanto Pokemon is fine, but having an abundance of them to overshadow the new pokemon is when it's pandering. The only gens I'd say are guilty of this are 4, 6, 8, and maybe 7. Generally, people play the new games to play with new pokemon, so when you play through a new game and see mostly old Pokemon, that's when it gets annoying

GSC i suppose but it was intended to be the end of the series, them adding kanto was really just a random idea and even if you wanted to talk about baby mons thats literally when breeding was introduced so its hardly a big deal. And i dont even recall anything kanto related in hoenn? After that you see stuff like gen 4 with a bunch of random evos for kanto mons or gen 6 just flat out giving you a kanto starter with a mega evo.

RGBY VC was after Sun & Moon, GSC VC was after Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. Both were Gen 7 which is also when we got Let's Go. Three different versions of Kanto in one generation.

Considering you battle them as opponents for most of the game, they're basically the same as recurring enemies like Goombas or Koopas. Or if you want to look at it from the other side, they're like recurring power-ups/items like Fire Flowers or Stars.

"Kanto Pandering" refers to a trend that mainly started happening around Gen 6 and onwards. Up until that point, Kanto got special treatment compared to other regions, but no more than you might expect given that it's the first one. Of course Gen 1 gets some extra love, that's to be expected. But it was always fairly minor.

In Gens 2, 3, and 4, Kanto Pokemon were around, but the focus was still mainly on the new region, new characters, and new Pokemon. Less so in Gen 2, but that's just because of the limited roster and because GSC were intended to be sequels more than a new generation.

Gen 5 went the extra mile and had a completely new regional dex. A lot of the new Pokemon were new spins on concepts in Gen 1, like the Roggenrola line being Geodude 2.0, or Sawk and Throh being remixes of Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, etc. A lot of the dex is like that. But that's honestly fine. Gen 5 was intended to be a soft reboot, so it makes sense they'd take a lot of cues from Gen 1. And all the Pokemon are still brand new, so it's not exactly Kanto pandering. Even in B2W2, when older Pokemon were added to Unova, they were still a wide selection from several regions.

True "Kanto Pandering" began in Gen 6, likely as a reaction to the harsh backlash against Gen 5. You see, many people are whiny babies who hate anything new, and they bitched and moaned when they were forced to use exclusively new Pokemon. They were not a majority, but they were very loud. So the Pokemon company responded by playing it safe and dialling up the nostalgia factor, which is how we got X and Y, which, to name a few points:
- Include Santalune Forest, an area with the EXACT SAME layout as Viridian Forest
- Were the first games since Johto to include more Pokemon from past regions in their regional dex than new Pokemon
- Straight up gift you a Kanto starter before the second gym
- Introduced Mega Evolution, a mechanic exclusively for older Pokemon, mostly Kanto Pokemon. The only Pokemon to get two Megas were Charizard and Mewtwo, popular Kanto Pokemon.
- We also got Pokemon Origins around this time, which, contrary to what most of /vp/ will tell you, is fine. It's a harmless little publicity stunt for X and Y to introduce Mega Charizard X. But it IS more Kanto, leading up to a generation packed full of Kanto.
Kanto was EVERYWHERE, and it was the first time the current generation felt completely overshadowed by the ones that came before it. Kalos Pokemon hardly seemed to matter at all, and it was hard to find them amidst the swarms of old Pokemon clogging up X and Y. Things relaxed after ORAS, but it was still weird, and Gen 6 has always felt slighted.

Then Gen 7 came along, and the Kanto pandering was less, but still there. The protagonist of SMUSUM was from Kanto. There was a Kanto-based Gym in Malie City, and of course, most famously, every single Alolan Form was a variant of a Kanto Pokemon. Some of this can be excused because 2016 was the 20th anniversary, but it was still overblown. Plus Alola still had more old Pokemon than new, but it wasn't as bad as in X and Y because the new ones were allowed to stay in the spotlight this time. On top of that, Pokemon Go came out in 2016, including Kanto Pokemon exclusively, and then we got Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, ANOTHER set of Kanto remakes, to promote Go.

And finally we got SWSH, which follow the trend of the past few gens and have more old Pokemon than new, and while we got regional forms for non-Kanto Pokemon this time, Gigantamax forms were given exclusively to Galar Pokemon and Kanto Pokemon, with Garbodor and Melmetal being the sole exceptions. And to top it all off, the Champion of the Galar region uses a Charizard as his ace. The Gen 8 Champion has a Gen 1 Pokemon as his signature mon.

So, to summarize, "Kanto Pandering" refers to a trend that began in Gen 6, when new Pokemon games began to put more emphasis on older gens, particularly Gen 1 and Kanto, instead of mainly hyping up the new Pokemon/region. It's when Kanto's special treatment surpassed honouring and acknowledging it as the first generation, and TPC started shoving down our throats at every turn. And it's all most likely an extreme reaction to the whiny bitches who lost their shit at Gen 5 for being all new.

Not in the same way though. Gen 2 was meant to connect with Gen 1 and form a complete whole because they initially thought Gen 2 would be the end. From Gen 3 onwards they started trying to make new gens stand on their own

Yellow technically has Kanto Pandering because it was pandering to the anime, and Gen 5 has Kanto Pandering because it tried to recapture the spark of Kanto by being a soft-reboot by only featuring new Pokemon in BW until the credits rolled. Also the Charizard Bridge that mindbreaks /vp/ on a daily basis.

Kanto Pandering really started in Gen 6, when Kanto started to be everywhere

Pokemon are just Pokemon. A kid playing Sapphire for his first game in the series isn't going to see a difference between Wingull and Tentacool just because one was introduced in an earlier game that he's never played before.

I'm glad you agree that the Mega Evolutions in Gen 6 weren't Kanto pandering since Mega Evolutions were given to Pokemon off all past regions including even Unova (Audino) and Kalos (Diancie) and only 31% of Mega Evolutions were Kanto Pokemon whereas 44% of Sinnoh cross-gen evolutions/babies were Kanto lines.

Bullshit. The focus in Gen 4 was absolutely not on the "new Pokemon." Only the Starly and Bidoof lines were given as much attention as the Geodude or Machop lines. Most of the new Sinnoh cross gen evolutions and legendaries were cut so that Sinnoh could have a Dex of 151, incidentally also the number of Pokemon in the Kanto Dex. Even many the Sinnoh Pokemon that remained were made rarer than Kanto Pokemon or only obtainable through gimmicks like Honey Trees. Platinum expanded the Dex but it too Kanto Pandering by adding the Legendary Birds, who are roaming Sinnoh for no reason.

No, the actual reason behind the classic fanservice in XY is because Masuda himself is an unironic Genwunner (the man remade this game TWICE). Kanto starters weren't going to be in the game until one of the artists, probably Ms. Nishida, pitched the idea and made him blush.

It started in Gen 6. You never heard the term before then. That was when things changed from Kanto Pokemon commonly being in later games to Gen 1 being shoved down our throats at every turn. Origins, more Kanto mons in a regional dex than new ones, Santalune Forest, Go and Let's Go having only the original 151 (plus Meltan/Melmetal), Let's Go in general being ANOTHER set of Kanto remakes, Alolan Forms being all Kanto mons, Leon's Charizard, G-Max Forms being 50% Kanto, etc.
Basically, Kanto pandering is when Gen 1 started to be everywhere. You can make a case for Kanto being overrepresented or acknowledged where it didn't need to be in other Gens, but Gen 6 was the when we started getting inundated with Kanto stuff at a disproprtionate level

Your point? 81 out of 151 is a larger percentage than 72 out of 457, obviously, so your conclusion is disingenuous. Why? Because the Kalos Dex has 111 Pokemon from Kanto and 274 Pokemon from regions other than Kalos and Kanto. That's 24% Kanto to 60% non-Kanto. On the other hand, DP Sinnoh has only 38 Pokemon from regions other than Kanto and Sinnoh and 32 from Kanto. That's 25% non Kanto to 20% Kanto. Moreover, the 81 Sinnoh Pokemon are not what you're likely to encounter. The Sinnoh ones nominally exist in the Dex but their availability is comparatively hampered due to often being locked behind gimmicks like Honey Tree, Great Marsh, or low encounter rates. You won't encounter Combee/Vespiquen, Cherubi/Cherrim, Munchlax, Skorupi/Drapion, Croagunk/Toxicroak, Hippopotas/Hippowdon, etc. on the routes themselves. The Pokemon you're most likely to encounter in the grass in DP are Kanto Pokemon.
