What's your favourite romhack and why? Do you prefer games that just change around the base game? Make a whole new game inspired by the series? Or go balls to the wall with new pokemon?

For emulating GBA on 3DS, open_agb is good. It uses the 3DS built in GBA emulator. For other games, GB games I would inject them into VC files but RetroArch would probably be fine too.
As for good romhacks I also like Clover and Radical Red was pretty fun.

Because they make the game reasonably difficult while buffing many of the weaker mons which made me use mons I usually never look at.

call me a fag but the level curve of pokemon games shouldn't be messed with and these two games did a hideous job at that.

For me Ultra S/M was peak performance in game balance (even if they are shit games story-wise)

Fool's Gold was so much fun. I loved seeing a pokemon come up and trying to guess their type based off design, thought the devs did a pretty good job of conveying that.
I don't know what the fuck was going on with the ghost town and Nurse Joys though
