Transvestite was the catch-all term for crossdressers and pre- and post-op transgender folk back in the 80s or so, but it's fallen out of fashion.
Transsexual was the go-to term in the early 00s, and is most known for post-op stuff.
Transgender is the current umbrella term for anyone who identifies as a gender other than what their doctor said on delivery - pretty much any openly intersex person fits this bill if they want the label.
