Mechanically speaking, how does Pokemon square up against other JRPGs?

Is it superior, or does it come up short in some ways or other?

What could Pokemon take from these other series to improve the game?

Examples: Digimon, SMT, SaGa, etc.

pokemon is made for co-op battling with the competitive scene im mind with every new addition, theres no purpose in comparing it to other jrpgs because it serves an entirely different niche than they do

The idea of two separate species evolving into the exact same species makes no sense biologically. Considering that pokemon themselves are somewhat grounded in our world, it would only confuse players as well as being pretty pointless to begin with.

Pokemon is already in the convoluted evolution line shit. It used to be one name = one Pokemon, and evolution lines were simple. Now we've got regional forms (that are effectively new Pokemon using the same slot) and all kinds of fucky shit.

Something I respect immensely about Digimon is its more rigorous approach to evolution, starting with its clear defined terminology relating to each stage as well as its providing each digimon with a clear pathway to evolution from start to finish.

I don't think Pokemon's maximum of 3 stages and ability to be 1 stage adds much to the quality of the game, and in fact probably makes it more difficult to balance.

after playing Cyber Sluts, I tend to appreciate Digimon system more.

Some digimon are too ugly like those poop shit ones so instead of evolving them into silver/golden variants, you can get a totally different digimon that look cool.

imagine instead of suffering eye-cancer from Incineroar and Cinderace, you evolve Torracat and Raboot to better evolutions

Actually it could be fun to have a three stages family with several possibilities for each stages. An Eevee-like Pokémon for example.

I disagree, the first 3 maybe 4 stages of a Digimon are irrelevant and are already there for them to have a kawai forme... It's like on pkm anime the main characters do not evolve their Pokémon. It's just because they are there to be cute...

the problem with digimon evolution trees is they are so convoluted and branched and there is STILL not an easy to read comprehensive list or diagram for every digimon. the pokedex is an intgral part of poekmon for a good reason. helps kids REMEMBER the hundreds of mons and their evolutions. you have to dig through multiple shitty wikis on digimon to figure out anything about them.

I had a dream that pokemon evolved like Digimon and you had to pick which route your pokemon went down and I was doing a run where Squirtle evolved into Dewgong, which in this dream world was considered some kind of strong digimon because it's Lorelei's signature pokemon.

I think that's where Pokémon shines. The fact it stripes down mechanics to the rudimentary level and removes clutter. Then again I am biased and dislike JRPG.

Pokémon is pretty complex desu. It has a really well thought type table an a shit to of attack and support moves with a lot of varied effects. Add the +800 Pokémon to the formula and you'll get a game with a lot of possibilities for team building.
Most jrpgs have poor type mach ups, character customization and skills.

In theory, it's superior, but the piss poor challenge the game offers makes pointless any team building.
More or less well done jrpgs like DQ or SMT may be simple but their first bosses will be harder than the most challenging Pokémon champion.
