It was also released after Pokemania subsided in the West. Third versions always sell fewer copies, even though they are more definitive experiences (look at Platinum vs DP or Emerald vs RS too). Crystal was objectively better than Gold and Silver. People who complain about Mareep being absent and legendary driven plots are idiots. Crystal even let you get Phanpy and Growlithe early, which is something even HGSS didn't do. Crystal just had the misfortune of being released at the wrong time.
