It's like he has the scientific knowledge aka batteling prowess that is rarely matched by the majority of people. Yes, they know some of the major matchup, like fire water grass, but dragon? Ghost? Rare type interactions are almost unknown to the majority of people.
Pokemon types are also mostly unknown, as you need to catch them AND have a pokedex to shed light on those. Most trainers are attacking wild mons randomly, with ineffective moves. That's why for example Ash uses Tbolt on Onix, he didn't know that it was ground type. Maybe he thought he was only Rock (don't matter that in anime bs it worked out)
