That said I remember treating the Ancient Mew I got as a holy relic. I did get a binder at some point and started storing my cards in that. Some cards like the Machamp that was included in the starter set got abused (because I was really young at that point).
But for the most part they stayed in decent shape...at the time though I think the concern was more to keep them fresh and shiny, the money really never entered my thoughts as an 8-11 year old. Had no real concept of investing or things growing in value over time.
