I've heard people complain about the free lucky egg but honestly gen 5's lucky egg along with the "manipulated" exp gain was their best system for me. It allowed me to bring mons up to speed to the rest of my team really fast, encouraging experimentation, while also hindering overleveling. I guess you could still overlevel if you actively tried but yeah.
