Lance unironically gets shit on by every Elite four in gen 1.
Even Bruno because in gen 1 lance had no flying moves and will spam agility against fighting types. Pretty sure AI have no pp either so 35 base sp ATK hitmonchan ice punch will destroy him eventually

Yes, what you can do with minimum common sense(coverage moves, having different types or even overleveling) is genius in-universe

Yeah there's lots of things that we don't have to do in the games that would be a pain in the ass in a real life encounter like aiming or conditioning your pokemon to hold their ground or dodge on command.
