While I get that the Pokemon world having so many regions is based on the real world having so many regions; what is the point of having so many regions that Game Freak will never go back to unless it's 12-15 years later?

Much better to have 5 maybe 6 regions and flesh them out as much as humanly possible than have 100 terrible regions across centuries of garbage.
