What are your thoughts in rematching trainers and other vs. seeker mechanics? Do you prefer games to have them?

Meh. Rematches lose their appeal very quickly for me especially when they’re random NPCs. I never used the VS Seeker.

This, mostly.
I much prefer rematching trainers to grinding on wild pokemon but just getting exp candies some in other ways/passively is much better.
There's always some use for vs seeker though. Grinding money or EVs if you prefer to do EVs that way

It's an essential feature, because otherwise the map is littered with NPCs that serve zero purpose whatsoever after being defeated once. It's poor game design not to have rematches in place.

The thing is that it would require a level-scaling system that Pokemon has never bothered to implement in order to be most effective. But regardless of GameFreak's laziness, the core feature is nevertheless not only desirable, but necessary to have.

said, but were crucial back then, specially in Gen 4 post-game island.

I wish they could've exploit it more. Rematching stronger trained mons are good EXP fodder, and if you add the Amulet Coin, you'll rank big bucks quickly.
I wish there was more useful places than just one or two trainers, maybe 3.
The only place I really managed to have a benefitial grind was in FRLG in the Cycling Road. Those bikers were my bitches.

I tend to approve of it for this reason alone, even if there are better ways to grind certain things in the latest games, and they are a money alternative to committing to an Elite 4 run, as anyone politely shaking down Gentlemen, Ladies, or Beauties for all their worth in FRLG or DPP can attest. You can power level with them too early of course, but that's just speeding up what you could already do with wilds.

There was some good exploitation for level, cash and item grinding. (A good one in ORAS both sides of the Petalburg Woods had a rich NPC that also had a chance of giving you a Luxury Ball. So it was good spam with the Amulet Coin too.)

There were some others too that gave hard to get items like PP Up/PP Max.
