Like, up to Gen 4 it mostly made sense.
Gen 5 had two that made sense (snivy to serperior and tepig to emboar) and one that was a huge shakeup in Oshawott to Samurott.
But Gens 6, 7 and 8 all had evolutions for their starters that just completely changed around their colors and themes in drastic ways. They were ways that came through in their second forms for sure, but like their base forms really didn't indicate what they'd turn into much at all.
I wonder if the same will happen this gen, in which case I'd doubt any concept that tries to "retain" a lot of factors from the first form.
