Serena for not letting Ash confront his own shortcomings. He became too accustomed to winning thanks to his protagonist status. We could've seen a more mature Ash that dealt loss in a dignified way. Maybe temporarily abandon his friends to train without distractions. Instead the series doubled down and made him more generic and boring.

It really is as simple as trying again. Losing a gym battle and even entire leagues isn't new for Ash. He usually trains and tries again instead of moping like a little kid. In previous seasons he's dealt with worse losses but doesn't let that discourage him. Because he understands he's not entitled to victory. XY forgot this and made him a generic shonen protagonist.

Not really. Most of the other seasons didn't have overarching plots or goals beyond exploration and adventure. XY tried to be serious but lacked the characters and stakes necessary to pull it off. Which is why the manga is better at telling a mature story. Ash was doomed to fail because he's not a serious protagonist. He's a fun character that's more accustomed to random adventures.

You got that in DP after Tobias stomped him, also as much as people hate it in BW where he didn't let the loses get in his way.
