Would a Battle Bond esque mechanic be good as a gimmick? Not a forme change necessarily, but maybe a stat boost or temporary access to a certain move by fufilling a certaim condition.

Needed the shillmon to be as special as possible so it could artificially gain popularity during gen 6. Best way to do that is put it everywhere and create multiple forms to shill multiple times.

The anime.
They wanted Ash to have a Mega out of his current roster, but Kalos didn't have Megas outside of Diancie, and Ash obviously wasn't getting Diancie. So they had to make up a form for Greninja to give Ash a power-up.

It's not a mega evolution.
It's a energy resonance caused by Ash's extraordinary aura.

Ash never had a stronger bond with any fully-evolved Pokemon prior to Greninja, which is why we never saw this before until then. No other trainers have as strong an aura as Ash does, so we didn't see anyone else do it.
