Gen 9 is just a placeholder! The real thing comes with gen 10. That's the good game the one hardcore fans are waiting for. With that said, let us, casuals, enjoy gen 9 as it is.

That game already happened, it was PLA. It was a game with harder difficulty and a playing style that greatly pleased long term fans instead of aiming to making new ones.
People fail to realize PLA was the long announced game for old fans because people wrongly assumes that old fans = competitive players (and also because they can’t understand a newly conceived playstyle could be directed to the older fans)

Yeah I agree with >>50288090, that's why PLA wasn't a mainline game. Now that GF got an overwhelming positive feedback from PLA they will start making a mainline game with most of PLA features. It's too late to do it for gen 9 so we will likely see it for gen 10.

I feel like gen 8 was the placeholder. Why the overworld looks so shit.
But it comes down to them being able to make a decent overworld without it looking like a unity asset dump.
If they can't actually handle overworlds like that, they should just go back to routes.

I feel the same way but with Gen 7 too.
Both were shitty asset flips with overtly linear "gameplay" and formulaic bullshit that revolves around some shiny new gimmick.
Ever since then all they've done is just slowly add back cut content that was planned for XY. If we're lucky, maybe Gen 9 will be the real Gen 7 instead of more of the same bullshit we got until PLA.

Gen 7 felt like they were trying to take it a step further, but were clearly struggling from the growing paints. Gen 6 fucked up with there 3d models, there is no arguing that. Sky battles killed so many flying types.
Gen 7 was them trying to get to a new level.
Gen 8. Was them rushing something out. Trying to push out the best they can, The art direction saved it because while the maps, and story were crap. The actual design and aesthetic were fantastic. Paths were to short to really get emersed into them though.
