While Emerald, Platinum BW and B2W2 are also pretty great, casuals in general are more nostalgic for Johto, so they tend to recognize GSC and HGSS even more than those (ie, compare the worst nugames to them)

Johto has gone the longest without an installment.
It's been nearly 12 years since Johto has been in a Pokemon game.
Anyone who's under 18 now would've been under 6 when HGSS came out. There's a good chance that the literal children who complain about Johto have never played a Johto game.
