The Anti-level grinding features add difficultly, but the more limited team options interfere with being able to prepare and make more sophisticated teams earlier. In order to get past the Poison gym I had to just throw 3 Noctowls at him until it worked.
While the writing is grim to serve as contrast to official line, it is so dark and grim the writing is hard to be taken seriously.
But I will grant the map design is well done for what they were going for tone wise.
Contrast this with Pokemon Insurgence, which has some difficulty and an interesting level curve, it does have the friend safari after the first gym. There by the time they throw megas out you can have a fairly balanced team of mostly whatever you want with hidden abilities even. You can even use the safari to easily EV train. And you can overlevel if you get to a point where you'd be stuck and don't want to remake your entire team and level grind them all over again. (Friend Safari also just gives you the 3 audio trainer so you can breed and Ev train even into the late game when you catch just the right species)
And while insurgence can also be dark, they allowed an option to just make it dark, not pointlessly edgy.
