I've chosen female protag exactly twice so far. Once was in Pokemon Crystal - it was a novel option and I had already played Silver with a same-sex self-insert. The second time was (used) Pokemon Shield, specifically because the male protag's bag is a hideous giant rectangle. Male protags have also been getting increasingly bland in my opinion (although in SV both protags are bland).
