That's literally it. It was THAT bad that Japanese Kids complained to high heaven and it permanently shifted how GameFreak did world design.
If we're talking about the game as a whole, add the dogshit regional dex that prioritized Kanto and the entire fucking Wurmple Line over the new evolutions.

Snow and marsh. Slow battles. Slow surfing. Terrible regional dex (this problem isn't nearly as bad in Platinum or BDSP as in DP, but the new additions are still rarer than the ubiquitous Machop and Geodude). Too many HMs. Legendary bloat with quite a few of them being either repetitive (Lake Guardians) or ugly as fuck (Heatran and Palkia), especially when you include Hisui (Origin Dialga and Palkia, Enamorus). I literally only like Giratina and the Lunar Duo (Darkrai and Cresselia). Everything else is either mediocre or ugly. Unova has the same problem with legendary bloat, but at least the Swords of Justice and Tao Trio make up for the buttugly genies.

Half the time I can't tell if some pokemon are from this or from Hoenn without looking it up. I can always tell if a pokemon is gen 5 or later, for instance.

Every NPC trainers have the same team
Half of the cities are industrial zones
Most of the region is covered with mud
