Take Watchog for example. It's a crossing guard because the animals it's based on often look out acting as guards for each other. So it has safety vest patterns and... that's it. You don't need to learn about its epic personality or learn about its hidden gimmick on the official site because they couldn't bother showing it off in any animation, it's just a funny little crossing guard thing.
