I prefer doubles but what is with VGC always having super autistic rules and banning regular pokemon/allowing one or two OP legendaries on teams? I don't know what's preferable, that or Smogon OU doubles with all 6 Pokemon being allowed and eliminating the strategic element of show 6/pick 4..

Why must the patrician format always get shafted..

Because VGC rules aren't built around balance.
Bans aren't made because a Pokemon is overpowered, but because it's hard to acquire. See Phione.
Show 6/pick 4 wasn't chosen for the strategic element, but because 4v4 battles are faster and therefore make for a better spectator sport.
Allowing 1 or 2 legendaries is done because GF wants to show the legendaries off, but they're restricted because a team of all legendaries is less visually interesting.
Some of these choices end up being good, but it's a complete fluke.

4v4 was established for a long time even before VGC even existed, just the doubles equivalent of 3v3 singles.

You are right, but there is a reason VGC chose 4v4 rather than 6v6. Or even 3v3 singles.
Because 6v6 and singles are both slower.

I'm not denying that's the format GF chose and is therefore "real Pokemon". Of course it's real Pokemon.
I'm just stating the reason they chose that format over all others.
4v4 doubles is in a sweet spot where it's fast enough for spectators to not get bored, but there's enough mons available to each player that it's not entirely matchup-dependent.

That would be an interesting format.
Just ban the most popular moves for one series, including Protect. Like they did for the most popular Pokemon in series 6
