They did with Sonikku, Just not in the world we live in. In this world, they're simple fanfictions, but in a different world, Sonikku and Pokemon went hand and hand as an animated television series. The backstory is that Satoshi Tajiri, believing Pokemon had run its course, decided to commit suicide, but before he was planning to end it all, he met up with Yuji Naka in Osaka, the two did drugs there in secrecy, which they earned from the "shit" games they made. After smoking blunts, they went on a rampage, running over people and getting high as the sky. Eventually they ran into an amerimutt, whom was visiting Japan at the time, High out of their minds, both agreed and signed contracts to him to use the rights for an animated television series that would air in America. Soon, the television series Sonikku Monsutā was produced, and began airing on April 1, 1997 and soon enough was followed by controversy, because it's TV-14, and had degenerate shit. After becoming Fox's second biggest success, Satoshi and Yuji were pissed they didn't get a split of the checks he was receiving, and after a lawsuit from 1998-1999, Game Freak and Sega split the Sonikku Monsutã series away from the Pokemon Brand and Sonic Brand. The show is currently at its 26th season as of 2022.
