Playing the game optimally means knowing all of your opponents options and forcing them into a position where the options that most inconvenience you are made unavailable to them.
If you're making reads, it means you've lost momentum. You aren't pushing your opponent into only being able to make the moves you want them to make, you're letting them pick freely between all the options they have available and trying to gamble on which one they're going for. Which is stupid.
