Since you brought it up, I'll mention your shitty-ass 'season' as well. SM has somewhat okay animation, but it ditches the 3D camera and HEAVILY downgrades the art style and shading. Thanks to that, the anime still ends up looking like garbage.
If you want to see what GOOD animators can achieve with a low-detail artstyle, go watch Mob Psycho. Pokémon looks like shit in comparison.

Not really, this anime isn't shonen. XY seemed like it wanted to move in that direction, but SM firmly pulled it back into 'FOR KIDS!' territory

The premise might sound 'shonen' but the execution is not. Also, the anime chose to ditch the 'travel' aspect as of SM and has softened the story by quite a bit.
If you want a more specific term for what the show's target demographic is, it's 'Kodomomuke'.

Who knows anon, the execs wanted to copy this one fad anime that came out during XY because it was 'beating' Pokémon, and they thought they could bring in viewership by doing so.
Of course, it didn't work and they're relying on cheap nostalgia bait to bring viewers back. It's...sort of working, but people only really come back for the nostalgia and leave once they realize how much of a nothingburger the rest of this show is.

Because Pokemania was at its peak at the start. This means most brand recognition comes from Gen 1. Production follows demand, so pandering to Kanto is the best way to fleece cash from normalfags.
It doesn't help most new designs suck, but that's probably intentional to an extent. Short staying power means they can cycle out new merch quicker(always a new thing to buy, keeps whales invested), while keeping Kanto as the strong backline for recognition and a more stable cash flow.

I can say as a teacher most kids now love the Kanto crowd because it's a generational connection. They get Charizard cards and toys handed down from parents who fondly remember the brand.

Makes sense. People who grew up during the height of pokemania are adults raising families right about now. That expendable wealth is baited by nostalgia, while also infecting their children with Kanto. A deliciously lucrative cycle for such a small indie animation and indie dev studio.
