Is the Pokemon cycle even real? Most of these games have reasonable reception at release, and usher in a new generation of fans. SwSh is maybe the most hated and controversial, and even that game still outperformed everything since RBY.

XY was not hated at release and it was barely controversial, aside from aging fans complaining about difficulty. Certainly wasn't as big as a deal as the bloody Dexcut, or the endless memes about bad animation. Sounds like you weren't there for either of these releases.

Skyward was actually kind of good because of its creative use of the Wii motion controls. The rest of the games suck as does the remaster.
