If you've got a decently powerful phone you can get the best of both worlds - portable, retains touch screen functionality, and higher resolution screen + a bunch of qol stuff depending on your emulator of choice like save states, speed modifier, unlockable frame rates, and different up-sampling/rendering modes to achieve whatever look you're going for. Biggest downsides are not all emulators have connectivity so you can't get trade evolutions, other versions' exclusives, spiritomb, or gba slot encounters + finding an emulator that runs good on your phone and has the features you want can take a bit of research.
