Actually I think SM and USUM were great entries to the series. First let's talk about muh kanto pandering. Alola is the tropical vacation home for veteran players, especially people who have played since the beginning. The player character having moved from Kanto, the inclusion of Oak, there are many details that make gen 7 a love letter to fans of the series. Then you have the story. Do you remember being a young child, wandering through the open world of Kanto without much of an idea what was happening or where you were going? Alola is a window to a world where it *was* all handed to you. You know you're not playing pokemon for the story, but even if you were, past the handholding, the story in SM is phenomenal. The trials are a relaxing romp through island life for the experienced trainer, and the UB arc hits that sweet nature vs nurture, mysterious goodness that keep players playing. The characters are amazing, the locations are captivating, and whether you like the new Pokemon in Alola or not, there are so many options for building a team. Honestly I can't even begin to list everything great about gen 7, but I hope this was more than enough to calm your hate boners. Thank you.
