Sugimori's design philosophy. A design can't be too good.
I think Turner takes it a step further, where instead of having good designs with some flaws, he has designs comprised of nothing but flaws.

Yeah it’s nice to have a real elephant mon. The excavator trunk wnd fortified body are nice extensions of pre existing attributes. The colors and patterns are really interesting as well. One of the best examples of how a animal based pokemon should look
