The movies are so poor in performance they gave up on them entirely, and it's clear they want the ratings back even if the network doesn't care thanks to the merch.
Also, the TRio, a beloved part of the anime and often cited as "the true main characters" have barely appeared as of late and they're genuinely at a point of contemplating retirement after meeting Cassidy and Butch again, who since last time did in fact retire. The Pokemon anime isn't the Pokemon anime without the TRio and this is a sign they want to wrap this universe up.
Face it, they're rebooting. There's literally nothing to lose since we're just getting a new coat of paint for the core cast of Ash, Pikachu, the TRio and Go (who's obviously staying to continue marketing Pokemon GO).
