It‘s still fucking amazing how red and blue sold so many with a smaller install base, higher prices and lower income. Pokemania was really something else and pokemon go only kinda showed it.

I was 11 when Pokemon hit. It was everywhere. The toys r us would set up to look like a league gym once a week and kids could play the card game or with link cables and earn badges. In my memory it still looks like pewter gym.

It had piss poor marketing and had to go up against elden ring so its not surprising that it's a relative slow burner. It seems to be moving entirely based on word of mouth marketing so I wouldn't be shocked if it continues to do well until the end of summer.

Comgnet is specifically metrics from pre-orders from a gaming store. They're not a very good "what does the wider audience buy?" since it's mostly a place for hardcore nerds/collectors. When we got actual "two versions SKU" numbers from sites like Amazon Japan the two-pack was always waaaaaaaay behind normal single unit SKUs.

It always makes me sad what happened to poor sun and moon. They sold EXTREMELY fast and were on-course to outsell DP, but then they announced USUM literally three months after they came out and the sales immediately dried up.

That chart is gonna need some adjustment.
PLA's sales numbers have literally doubled since then, it's at 12.64 million now.
The Diamond and Pearl remakes have only made another 1 million sales in that time, bumping up to 14.65 million, for comparison.

I wouldn't be surprised if the figures for PLA peak around 18-20 million, based on current momentum.

Are you making these assumptions based on your ass? BDSP's first sales report was for 1.5 months after release and it sold 13.97m, PLA's first sales report was for 2 months after release and it sold 12.64m. Not sure what "momentum" you're looking at, but it doesnt take a genius to see PLA has had a slower rate of growth compared to BDSP.

Third versions were only ever a tool to keep the brand in the eyes of kids. The addicted bought in too, granted. But kids and addicts pale in comparison to normies on the first wave of game sales and parents who understand (or just guessed) third versions were a meme of a game to steal sales. Without them, game just doesn't sell like Pokémon does.
