Ash battled him in the Sinnoh League semi finals after beating Paul, one of Ash's rivals. He had an overpowered Darkrai, and it too 5 of Ash's 6 Pokemon to beat it. The issue was that he had a Latios too, and it basically told the audience, "Ash will not win a league."

Second-worst was the Alola 'League', where Ash wins the whole thing and BECOMES CHAMPION without using even a single reserve Pokémon. Literally nobody, except people who only cared about Alola, wanted Ash's Championship match to be restricted to nothing but his newer mons.
