Except Leon jobs to the XY guy and XY guy faces ash in the grand finals where ash wins.
From my limited knowledge of the anime it sounds like XY guy is the overpowered final boss chad who makes ashnime cucks seethe. I feel like they wouldn't bring him back just for him to lose in round 1 but its probably for ashs personal redemption.
Maybe I'm wrong though, I literally don't watch the anime at all kek

Literally none of the match-ups have been confirmed yet. The Lance/Ash picture was just for an interview with Lance's VA. The other pictures putting everyone together are also just promotional pieces for the M8 characters.

This kind of promotional material happens all the time, and it usually doesn't mean much. Back in XY, similar stuff claimed that Noivern would be big and reliable during the League. In BW, a magazine promotion implied Bianca would make it far into the League.

How is Diantha realistically stronger than Cynthia? We barely know anything about Diantha's strength in comparison to Cynthia's, who's been hyped up a lot. Diantha isn't even't stronger in-game; she only has higher levels in the initial match, and Cynthia's post-game team beats her there.
