Actually lots of people didn’t expect or even want Iris to be in it because she already lost to Ash and the writers needed a bit of plot convenience to make her being there make sense. And before Paul was revealed anime OCs and past rivals weren’t even on the table. They even came up with a legitimate reason for why Gary isn’t competing in that he thinks it’s too many competitors compared to a regular League tournament.

Even though it seems obvious with hindsight, they actually kept people guessing for a long time.

Nah that’s just you speaking from hindsight. The moment Iris lost to Ash in the Great Class no one actually thought she would be in the final roster besides hardcore Iris stans. And there were denialfags thinking Flint would be in the final lineup. Wallace was a popular pick but the writers flat out reconfirmed him in a recent episode. Paul appeared in the opening so everyone thought he would be in the roster, Alain was a complete surprise. You’re probably the type of loser that goes “ou ou I knew the answer the whole time I was just testing you :)”

Not really, like I said they had to rely on a plot convenience after writing themselves into a corner with Iris. When she lost to Ash, Ash ranked up into the hyper class which has 5 scheduled matches. The only way for her to have got into the Masters 8 before Ash is by defeating someone of a super high Great Class rank, twice, literally right after she lost.

It's not hindsight to figure they'd have the M8 filled with the legitimate champions from each region and Alain. The only real things I didn't know for sure is if it'd have been Iris or Alder for gen 5 and Steven or Wallace for gen 3. Iris makes the most sense because she'd the last game's champion and the same logic applies for Steven.

It's not the contrived if that was her only loss. Ash had multiple losses and a draw beforehand, so Iris losing once shouldn't really set her back if she just continued to win against higher rated opponents on average.

The difference is losing to Ash would set her back in her rank, and the only way she would be able to get into the Master Class before Ash and rank above him is if she beat at the most two high ranked Great Class trainers back to back. Doing all of that while also doing your 5 scheduled matches in the Hyper Class including the promotion match against a current Masters 8 member all around sounds very contrived. There’s a reason why her being there came as such a shock to nearly everyone.

She just recently started her WCS entry, so her rank would still vulnerable to big swings if she matches with high-ranked opponents. Considering that she's a Champion, it probably wouldn't be difficult to locate and beat high-ranked Great Class trainers and boosting her average opponent rating that way.

Of course we're just figuring out something that the writers should've made clear, but it's totally possible to do what she did.

Holy cope. Garchomp literally gave Torterra a free shot with Giga Drain, and then blocked Frenzy Plant with pure strength alone, and then one-shot Torterra. Axew ate a Dragon Rush and Draco Meteor and dealt more damage with Giga Impact. Iris obviously did much better.

You retard. Mega Evolution gives a tremendous boost in power. If Mega Houndoom lost, then there was no way that regular Houndoom was going to win even with an ability advantage. She Mega Evolved because she needed to.

Due to Flash Fire half of Zard’s moveset was irrelevant. Malva took that and then Mega Evolved Houndoom for whatever reason. Houndoom was super nimble and dodged every single one of Mega Zard’s attacks. It didn’t need to Mega Evolve, and even when it did it still was completely in a separate tier than Zard. Again, the only reason it lost was because it couldn’t dodge the strongest Fire-type move that is also coincidentally unavoidable.

Mega Evolution increases its power. Mega Charizard powered though Mega Houndoom's Flamethrower with physical strength alone, and Mega Houndoom used moves such as Crunch to parry Charizard's moves. Both Mega Evolutions were pretty close in strength, and there's no question that Mega Charizard is stronger than Houndoom just on the basis that it matched Mega Houndoom's power. Mega Charizard likely beats regular Houndoom even with just half of its moveset.

Everything you said is headcanon on the basis that we watched the battle and it did not turn out how you thought it would. Mega Zard took Flamethrower because it was 4x ineffective to it and yet it still couldn’t escape it. Houndoom dodged all of Mega Zard’s attack even when they were up close, parried its Dragon Claw and Steel Wing with ease, and completely overpowered Mega Zard’s Flamethrower with its own Flamethrower. In terms of power Mega Zard was completely outclassed. It won solely due to its unavoidable and overpowered Blast Burn that even Malva comments on how ridiculous it is. It was so bad that the animator changed the way it was depicted literally the series after.
