By gen 4 I wasn't enjoying the anime anymore. It still sort of kept the quirkiness of the first seasons but it was already heading into sterilization. And then gen 5 anime happened and yeah, show just wasn't the same anymore.

With the way the anime is going, it would be the perfect way to end his journey. Kinda have my doubts though, because they made his dream of "Pokemon Master" pretty vague.

They already said becoming a pokémon master is more than just winning battles though. And because "becoming a pokémon master" is a intangible goal, no clear path or set outcome like "i'm going to become Champion of Sinnoh" has, it makes it easier to bring him back as "he's not a Pokémon Master yet".
