Bringing back an oldmon randomly and out of the blue only happens when nostalgia has to be pandered to and since the anime already has Alain as the Megazard shill, Trevor as the lesser Megazard shill, Kiawe as the Charizard transport shill and Leon as the Kaiju Charizard shill Ash's Zard can only really be used to shill the base design. It's all but lost it's significance in the grand scheme of things despite what nostalgia will tell you.
On the other hand Ash is straight up the descendent of an Aura Warrior, has bonded with the Lucario family in the past on multiple occasions and has shown a limited capacity for sensing and utilizing Aura himself. Lucario being his signature mega actually ties in to a lesser known character trait and actually gives something to work with other than nostalgia pandering.
Also his Lucario is a hot head and they're perfect for each other.
