That second post is largely incorrect. Zelda, Mario, and Sonic have callbacks to their most popular entry in almost every game they ever do, or at the very least, they used to do that.
"Kanto" pandering as it's known today, really began with Generations 6 and 7, wherein entire locations were lifted from the Kanto region wholesale and an inordinate amount of Pokemon otherwise analogous to the Kanto region were treated with greater significance in what was otherwise, a new place, like the Bird trio being re-used for XY's post game legendary hunt, along with Mewtwo. The only Kalos legendary to accompany these four mons was Zygarde. Granted, Kalos did also reference Johto, Sinnoh, and Unova. With Alola, these references were trimmed back and Kanto references were scaled up.
This ultimately culminated in Generation 8's Leon, which is a valid point of contention.
