I don’t really see the gap between Gyms 1 and 2 in XY to be an issue, the game opens up and lets you explore a lot of new areas

in XY's case that's just locking parts of locations you visit from the main campaign and reverse-railroading them back to you later on in the main game.

In a lot of games you have to go through some kind of cave and a rival battle to get to gym 2 because of course Kanto did it
In gen 6 and 7 it feels like they replace that with sections that are longer yet more boring and handholdy
It just makes replaying these games so much more annoying when compared to previous gens

The first routes are the worst part of any Pokegame. No one likes to fight with and against tackle-growl shitmons endlessly. The fact that those games are incredibly lopsided and the pacing crashes when it actually matters is legitimate criticism, you lunkhead

Not really, the order you "explore" the routes and areas in that part of the game is completely linear, it just loops around itself a few times to pretend something interesting is happening
