I have played the game.
In fact i have completed the story and beaten Red like 5-6 times my man, and I have never gotten pokerus. So HOW do you get it?

There is a very slim chance of getting your party infected when battling wild Pokémon. It's more likely to get a shiny, iirc.

i've never had pokerus except in gen iv, which me and my brother were playing through together and both got it before we even hit floaroma. never seen it before or since - weird shit

It's just a small bonus, something that is nice when happens but is not vital to the game. In old times game developers were putting this kind of surprised to boost popularity of their game - people were trading rumors and knowledge about something that happened in game and thus were spreading popularity of it.
