These Pokémon were just created to give the Johto region some more depth. Eventually they would come to have a connection with the Legendary Beasts in marketing and in Crystal, implying a connection between the two. In HGSS, Arceus would later use Unown to create the egg in the Sinjoh Ruins.
The Unown were created to have hidden power whose type and power differed. My hesdcabon is that Unown is the programming language of creation in the Pokémon universe, and Arceus uses Unown to design everything else.

Originally in development they were reincarnated unnamed victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but after the scope got scaled down to Kansai rather than all of Japan, plus Pokemon going international in the first place, they decided to make them weird anomalies with no exact lore until M03 made them live in their own dimension and have the capacity to bend reality in gargantuan numbers, and once HGSS came, give a connection to Arceus.

Honestly glad it's so much easier to shiny hunt them in PLA. I already had a couple shiny unown in a couple other games. I've got 6 so in PLA(all different) and even though I know it's a lot easier than other games it's still very time consuming.

I actually really love the unown for some reason

In Gen 4 it is somewhat explained they are like the spacetime fabric that makes the universe.

I had a dream a couple weeks ago that I was in a classic Gameboy monochrome colored classroom and a teacher was there to give me lessons on spelling words from different Unown letters in my team. Different words/combinations would work as combos that would give them new abilities and powers if used right.
