A good example is Charizard. Zard hits like a truck in the sun, but even if your sun setter is KO'd, Charizard isn't instantly out of the game. The sun still lasts a little longer, while Weezing's neutralizing gas doesn't.
I won't deny that Regigigas is strong and can work if everything goes right, but EVERYTHING needs to go right. And because VGC is a best of 3 format, there's a reason it didn't really catch on.
