The NPC that gives you the Headbutt TM literally tells you to use it on trees. After that it's just a matter of finding a lucky tree. I managed to find Heracross like that back in the day.

It's pretty funny that people say this ironically now like it's a joke. This is exactly what I always do whenever I play GSC and it's fun - it's a brand new game mechanic and it's part of the game. Is exploring the grass or sea for new Pokemon now suddenly incriminated as a 'bad' thing as well? "headbutt trees le bad xD" is such retarded revisionism that it defies all logic. It's literally just an excuse for trolls to shit on Gen II.

All grass on the same route has the same encounters. There is no difference between grass patches, so there's no reason to assume a difference between trees.

Bringing it up was constant when people cared about BDSP for anything more than Salesposting too (even if you could get Munchlax through the far more convenient Grand Underground).
It's an objective fact for DPPt it was easier to get Munchlax from transferring a Snorlax from Gen 3 or trading from HGSS and breeding with the Full Incense.

One thing the internet allowed us was a diverse amount of things to spend our time on so we don't have to waste it grinding on some ancient 8-bit Game Boy game. Why bother with the shit parts of the game instead of choosing to only interact with the kino parts of it? And I get it GSC made so bullshit decisions (Bugsy’s team is retarded, and I think being able to have access the all Gen 2 Pokémon in Johto is a reasonable expectation, and the level curve is…not good ) it just seems that the amount of complaints about it seems disproportionate since Johto hasnt been given any shilling or attention recently to justify people student remembering things they don’t like about a 20 year old game.
